Reviving Arizona Grown: Strengthening Local Agriculture and Markets

Written by Gabriel Flores (Government Relations Intern)

First established in 1992, Arizona Grown® was created to promote and support the state’s agricultural community by helping consumers identify locally produced goods. Over time, however, the program became less visible, and its impact diminished.

Now, after nearly a decade of dormancy, the Arizona Department of Agriculture is working to bring Arizona Grown back, this time with a renewed purpose and a modern approach. The relaunch aims to transform Arizona Grown from a simple label into a meaningful, market-driven tool that supports producers and strengthens connections across the supply chain.

Why Arizona Grown Matters

At its core, Arizona Grown is about visibility and connection. For consumers, it provides a clear way to identify products grown and produced within the state. For farmers and ranchers, it offers an opportunity to stand out in a competitive marketplace.

Buying local is often seen as a personal choice, but it carries broader implications. Supporting Arizona agriculture helps keep dollars within the state, strengthens rural communities, and supports the long-term viability of local food systems. Programs like Arizona Grown play a key role in making those connections more visible and accessible.

From Label to Market Tool

Among the most significant changes made during the re-launch process is how Arizona Grown will be utilized. In addition to being used only as a branding tool, the program has been redesigned to actively support access to the marketplace and provide access to supply chain relationships.

The new goal will be to provide farmers with greater connectivity to retailers/restaurants/buyers and provide tools to help their agricultural business grow. In addition, by aligning producers' needs with the market's expectations, Arizona Grown will increase its ability to create an economic opportunity.

The new model reflects a more expansive understanding of agriculture—not only as production but also as a part of a larger system of companies and people who contribute to the final product entering into distribution, into the marketing channels, and to the end consumer.

A Program Built by Industry

The revitalization of the Arizona Grown program takes place primarily through a focus on input from the industry. To facilitate this, producers, ranchers, and agricultural businesses have been asked to provide feedback through surveys and stakeholder engagement to help create the future of Arizona Grown.

As part of this process, guidelines will be developed that incorporate the issues faced by the various agricultural sectors, including dairies, grain producers, beekeepers, and specialty crop growers. By documenting input directly from the participants in agriculture, Arizona Grown aims to create an effective program that is representative of the agriculture industry.

This effort to develop trust within the agricultural community through a collaborative means will help ensure that Arizona Grown is a program that can be utilized by all producers throughout Arizona.

What This Means for Arizona Producers

Producers located in Maricopa County and throughout Arizona have an opportunity to participate in the relaunch of Arizona Grown as new ways for their products to gain greater visibility and recognition from potential customers. They will also develop greater contacts with buyers, which should help them to find more markets and additional potential partners.

The rising costs of growing food, as well as the increasing competition faced by farmers, are challenging issues faced by agriculture today. Programs that provide ways to promote the products of Arizona and encourage consumer support are crucial to the success of the agricultural community. Arizona Grown is one such program and will serve to connect producers with consumers, creating value for both.

Arizona Grown will also act as a way to promote Arizona agriculture by allowing producers to tell the story of how they grow food in the desert through the use of materials, resources, and innovation.

The Bigger Picture

The revitalization of Arizona Grown reflects a broader effort to strengthen local food systems and improve supply chain resilience. Recent years have shown how important it is to have reliable, transparent, and locally supported systems in place.

By focusing on connection, transparency, and market alignment, the program has the potential to contribute to a more stable and efficient agricultural economy. Supporting local agriculture is not just about preference; it is about building a system that can adapt, grow, and continue to meet the needs of the state.

Looking Ahead

As Arizona Grown moves toward its official relaunch, its success will depend on continued collaboration between producers, industry leaders, and market partners.

As one perspective puts it:

“Arizona Grown is being reimagined as more than a label—it’s a tool to better connect producers with markets and ensure the value of Arizona agriculture is recognized across the supply chain.”

This renewed vision highlights the program’s potential to play a meaningful role in the future of Arizona agriculture.

The Bottom Line

The Arizona Grown initiative is not just a mark of branding; it is an opportunity to create stronger ties between those who produce goods and the customers who buy them. The Arizona Grown program focuses on access to market, input from stakeholders, and relationships between suppliers and customers, and will increase the resiliency and visibility of the state’s agricultural industry.

As Arizona Grown returns to the marketplace, it also serves as a reminder that to support local agriculture, we must not only know where food is produced but realize that our investment in people, communities, and systems enables local food production to occur.
