Navigating the Landscape of Agriculture: A Conversation with Paul Brierley

Welcome Arizona Aggies, to this special Careers in Agriculture edition of the Arizona Agriculture Connection. In our latest episode, we had the opportunity to sit down with Paul Brierley, the Director of the Arizona Department of Agriculture. His journey through the agricultural sector is as winding as the paths that lead to the farms and fields he speaks about. Let’s delve into the insights and experiences he shared with us.

A Journey Through Agriculture

Paul Brierley’s path is as diverse as the crops Arizona grows. Born on the border in Calexico, California, and later growing up in Santa Barbara County, agriculture has been a lifelong companion for Paul. His early experiences driving hay trucks even before reaching the pedals and working alongside his father in farming laid the foundation for a career deeply rooted in agriculture.

Fast-forward, and Paul’s involvement has grown from farm activities to a significant leadership role. His academic journey led him into engineering and telecommunications, but a longing for the farmland brought him back to agriculture. 'Being back on the farm felt right,' Paul shared, explaining how his visits to rural Arizona rekindled his love for the land and its people.

Exploring Opportunities Beyond Farming

One of the standout points Paul makes is that agriculture offers a wealth of career opportunities beyond the traditional roles of farmer or rancher. Engineering, technology, and innovation are pivotal in solving the industry’s pressing problems. 'There’s so much opportunity,' Paul emphasized, highlighting the potential for cutting-edge technology solutions like laser weeders and self-driving tractors.

For young people or career changers interested in agriculture, Paul advises not to be deterred by not having a farming background. Agriculture impacts every vital issue today: water, climate change, labor, taxation, and beyond. It’s a field ripe with opportunity and necessity.

The Role of Leadership and Community

Leadership has been a critical aspect of Paul’s journey. From his involvement in grassroots politics and organizations like Farm Bureau, he learned that roles of influence often emerge from consistent participation and reliability. 'The world is run by those who show up,' Paul affirmed, advocating for active involvement in community and industry organizations as a pathway to leadership.

Programs like Project CENTRL have been instrumental in building networks and confidence in this field. For Paul, programs that combine knowledge, leadership skills, and networking have been pivotal. They empower individuals to impact agriculture by providing insights and connections across the state and the nation.

As the Director of the Arizona Department of Agriculture, Paul Brierley’s responsibilities are vast. From running a dynamic agency to engaging in national and international discussions on trade and policy, his role is multifaceted. Yet, at its core, his passion remains supporting the industry and solving problems that affect producers every day.

Paul's recent roles also include being the lead US delegate at the Tri-National Agricultural Accord, underscoring the critical nature of international collaboration. He stresses the importance of maintaining and improving the USMCA trade agreement to secure seamless trade among the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Looking Forward

'Oh, the places you will go,' Paul muses, reflecting on a career that has taken him to unexpected heights. His story is a testimony to the diversity and depth within the agricultural sector. With programs like Arizona Grown relaunching and continually evolving trade opportunities, the future is bright for those willing to step into this essential industry.

Paul's message is clear: agriculture offers abundant opportunities for those willing to engage. Whether through state programs, industry associations, or international relations, the field is wide open for new ideas and dedicated individuals. As Paul aptly puts it, 'If you keep saying yes, it’s miraculous where you'll end up.'
